The internationally renowned cellist André Navarra (1911-1988) showed throughout his life enormous affection for Toulouse, the "Ville Rose" of his childhood.
In October 1999, his pupils and friends, wanting to express their faithful attachment and respect to their professor, organised an international cello contest, which culminated in a brilliant final round at the Halle aux Grains concert hall in Toulouse.
A second version of this major musical event will be organised from 23 to 29 June 2008. The 2nd André Navarra International Cello Contest is being organised with help from Toulouse's Town Hall and Conservatoire; also taking part are the Toulouse Capitole Orchestra and the Toulouse Chamber Orchestra. The Contest is being patronised by France's major cultural institutions.
